Deck the Halls, Not the Fire Exits: A Facility Manager's December Checklist for Clear Escape Routes and Signage
Share
Busier premises, temporary stock and festive decorations are a seasonal pattern that can quietly compromise escape routes. Use this six-point checklist to keep your exits and fire safety signs clear through December.
Check 1: Decorations
Keep lights and decorations off escape routes and fire exits, and never cover fire safety signs or extinguishers, in line with fire and rescue service Christmas advice for businesses.
Check 2: Stock and storage
No stock, even temporarily, in fire escapes. Add "Fire exit keep clear" or "Do not block fire exit access" signs at exits to remind staff and delivery drivers.
Check 3: Extra people
If footfall or staff numbers rise for the festive period, review your fire risk assessment and confirm your exits and signs are still sufficient.
Check 4: Sign condition and visibility
- Walk every escape route end to end.
- Replace faded, damaged or obscured signs.
- Confirm fire action notices are current.
Check 5: Closedown routine
Switch off and unplug electrical items such as heaters and festive lights, close fire doors, and consider a short written shutdown checklist for whoever locks up.
Check 6: Temporary changes
If your layout changes for events or pop-ups, add temporary signage so people can still find the way out.
